TOPIC: What made the Banjo your chosen instrument?

Re:What made the Banjo your chosen instrument? 14 years 1 month ago #2567

Speaking of Grandpa Jones, the songs he did I remember best are "I'm from Dixie" and "Five More Miles to Louisville". He was a great banjo frailer and quite a showman.

I watched Hee Haw with my grandmother but didn't pay too much attention to the banjos at that point. That's where I heard country music for the first time, as well as fm radio in the 80s. The banjo choose me, not the other way around, since I found out I could play a roll pretty easily on guitar.

Before I was interested in any stringed instruments, I really wanted to play the french horn and study classical music.

I always liked classical music and especially BACH.

I then gravitated to the Harpsichord for the nice fast high plunky sound. To me the banjo has that same plunky sound without much sustain and can be fun.

No I wish I did. I remember being about 5 or 6 years old and my dad came home with some classical records for me. I think they were specifically for kids as on one side you heard an entire orchestra and on the other you heard the instruments individually with a narrator telling you some simple information about the instrument and what "family" it was in. Classical guitar might be on my 'to do' list someday, but you can play Bach with a pick if you like!
