When starting out creating your blues riffs, its best to keep it simple. Your target notes should be the root notes. You should know the root note patterns on the fretboard and the relationships of your root notes to each other to be able to find them quickly. On the guitar, the octave root note can be found on a diagonal two strings away from any other root note. You will not find another nearby root note on the string that is right next to a root note. You'll have to go at least two strings over to find a nearby root note. Similar situation on mandolin. Banjos are more haphazard but still there are some patterns between root notes. Best to figure them out and use them.

Thanks for the post. I was suppose to do it last week and got buried in making a living and making it to Colorado. You did better saying what we need to do. It's cold here, my banjo here is dried out and plays extremely good. Maybe it's just because Fretmentor is a good teacher. See you in 2 or 3 weeks.
