TOPIC: Blues Chord progressions in different keys

Blues Chord progressions in different keys 9 years 5 months ago #8156

In the never-ending quest for musical excellence, the Fretmentor would like us to be able to play any blues tune in different keys (without freaking out). He showed us how we can play the 1-4-5 chord progression in different keys, including sharp and flat keys, by simply taking open chord forms and moving them up the neck.

For guitar, you can take an open chord form, such as D, and move it up the neck (with a bar in place)to get a D# chord, E, F, F#, G, etc. This gives you the 1-chord. Then, at this chosen position, the 4 and 5-chords use the G-form and the A-form, respectively (again, with a bar in place) since these are the 4 and 5 of D-form used for the 1-chord.

There are 5 open chord forms on the guitar (C-A-G-E-D)which can be used in the same way as described above. The banjo has 3 open chord forms (C-E-G). Not sure about the Mando....

It would be helpful to learn where the root notes are on the fretboard so you can quickly go to the right fret to start your 1-4-5 chord progression.
