TOPIC: Class 11 05 - playing lead out of chords or scales

Class 11 05 - playing lead out of chords or scales 9 years 5 months ago #8150

We played “Sweet Home Chicago” in E which is not the typical 12 bar blues.
There is a quick 4 on the 2nd measure = 2nd measure goes to the 4 chord.
Typical: 1 1 1 1 4 4 1 1 5 4 1 5
SHChigago: 1 quick 4 1 1 4 4 1 1 5 4 1 5

We discussed playing the lead out of a chord. i.e. 4 = A
Play/strum the A chord and with the pinky play -–3 -– 3 -– 2—2—0 (on the high e = 1st string)
Awesome!!! - as lawyers say “in my opinion” Awesome :) -. Eric Clapton plays a lot of his songs doing this.
So try to learn the lead with keeping the corresponding chord position.

You can also play the lead based on a scale.

David played different Christmas songs out of a “scale” within the same frame with a combination of scale structures.

Practice for next class: pick a minor pentatonic scale from the blues material each week and learn one per week. Continue to learn the lead for Sweet Home Chicago.

Doug, did you notice when I wrote a review on the blues class after you nominated me, that my review got over 800 reviews and yours from the week before got 7? It kind of reminds me High School. We missed you last week.
