Blues class Sept 3 9 years 6 months ago #8024

In the blues class last night we learned a cool "Sweet Home Alabama" riff. Its based on the major pentatonic scale, which is just a major scale, minus the 4th and the 7th notes. So the major pentatonic scale goes like this: 1-2-3-5-6.

The SHA riff starts on the "5" note and has the following progression:
5-6-8-2-8-6-5-3, where the 8-note is the octave of the 1-note.
Alphabetically, in the key of D, the notes are A-B-D-E-D-B-A-F#.

The chord progression going along with this riff is 1-7b-4. The 7-chord must be flatted, because the 7 chord does not work with the major scales (it sounds bad, and causes the fretmentor to recoil in horror). In the D-scale, the 7 is a C#, so if we flatten that we get a C-chord, giving us the D-C-G chord progression (key of D) that sounds oh-so-good with this riff.

Practice this riff with dedication and fortitude, such that we may go forth and jam using this riff in true skynyrd style............
