Playing Movable Riffs in Blues
We practiced two riffs. First “Movable Blues basic Riff #1” in different notes/roots.
The structure of the riff is Root – octave – b7 – 5
For example: in G(I)= G G F D, C(IV)= C C A# G and D(V)= D F C A. It is better to think in Root(I), IV, V Octaves, than to concentrate on the actual notes G, C, D, G.
The riff always has the same pattern/structure. In guitar there is a shift at the second string. Move one fret up.
We also practiced “Movable Blues Basic Riff #2”
The structure is: b3 hammer on 3 - Root – b7 – 5
This riff is movable, again in guitar shift one fret up at second string.

In guitar if you find your Root, your IV is same fret one string down, the V is same fret one string up (remember shift at second string), on the E string you can find the V one string up from the Octave. The Octave is 2 frets up and two strings down (except at shift) move 3 frets over and two strings down.

Practice Riff #1 and Riff #2 played subsequently together.

Question for next class: In which note do we play the turnaround?
