TOPIC: Using root notes and patterns

Using root notes and patterns 9 years 8 months ago #7887

In today's blues session, we used the root notes at the inlays to play 8-bar blues progression. At the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd inlays on the 6th string you have root notes for G, A, and B. At those same inlays on the second string, you have the C, D, and E. These are good starting points for navigating up the fretboard. Now, at any root note, you can skip two strings over and two frets up, and you get another one of the same root note. This is a simple pattern that can be repeated all over the fretboard to find root notes. Another simple pattern is that the IV note is on the very next string (same fret) from the root note, and then the V note is two frets up from the IV note. This works regardless of which key you're playing in. Other patterns exist for scales (pentatonic and others)that can be easily repeated all over the fretboard.
