TOPIC: Use of Inlays - horizontally and vertically

Use of Inlays - horizontally and vertically 9 years 11 months ago #7609

We reviewed how to use the inlays on the guitar (like a GPS system) and how inlays help playing the minor pentatonic scales.

Use of inlays horizontally:
We can play 5 minor pentatonic scales (E, A, D, G, B ) starting with the open string that coincide with the inlays (exception 9th fret, see previous week’s post).
i.e. E minor pentatonic scale (R-3b-4-5-7b-R = R 3 2 2 3 2R) starting on open E string
Root = open string = no inlay = E
3rd fret = INLAY – 3b = G
5TH fret = INLAY – 4 = A
7TH Fret = INLAY – 5 = B
10th = exception no inlay–inlay on 9th–
visually move 1 fret up from inlay - 7b = D
12th = double INLAY - octave Root = E

Use of inlays vertically: helps finding 4 and 5
i.e 3rd fret on A string is C (C=1, F=4, G=5)
4 is on same fret (inlay) one string down and
5 is on same fret (inlay) one string up

!!! When going from G to B string 4 shifts one fret up:
5th fret on G is a C=1, so 6th fret on B is F=4 or

Second example G=1, C=4, D=5
Open G string is G=1, 4 on B string shifts one up = 1st fret on B = C and 5 is open D string

I hope this is right… @%^&*#
Sorry could not retain the banjo inlays.
