One of the things we learned about yesterday in the Fretmentor Blues class was the use of the insets (the indicator dots at the 3rd, 5th, and 7th, etc...) on the guitar. It turns out that the insets indicate the minor pentatonic scale on each string. The only exception is the 9th fret, where you need to skip up one fret (to the 10th fret) to get the 7b note of the scale. So it goes like this: Root note of the minor pentatonic scale is open string, 3b is at 3rd fret inset, the 4 is at 5th fret, the 5 is at 7th fret, the 7b is at 10th fret, and the octave root is at 12th fret. This works on any string. We talked about the Mando + Banjo insets too, but I dont remember how they work -- maybe someone else could post the insets story on those instruments.
