Last night in the "impromptu group" Brian who had the lead made eye-contact with me so I assumed he had passed the lead on to me....So I took it....then I heard Steve playing the lead with me so he probably thought it was his lead too...what is one supposed to do when this happens??? I wanted to stop and go to chord playing but was "afraid" Dave would then "correct me" for being a "wuz"....what should I have done???

I think you did the right thing. You two sounded pretty good playing your little impromptu duet together.
