TOPIC: Pete Seeger Guitar Guide

Pete Seeger Guitar Guide 13 years 2 weeks ago #5216

At our great Kruger Brothers weekend, Ewe Kruger suggested we go on line to the Smithsonian website in Washnington DC to get The Folksingers's Guitar Guide by Pete Seeger. I just found the PDF and downloaded it. This is the link:
media.smithsonianfolkways.org/liner_notes/folkways/FW08354.pdf

This is not a substitute for getting lessons with FretMentor which we should all be doing, but just an added guide to your music library.

Downloaded the Pete Seeger Guitar Guide - it's a pretty amazing piece of music history and nostalgia. It has got be one of the first instruction books ever - getting right down to the basics.
Read over the section on Tuning - we are so used to touching a button to turn on our electronic tuners - and tuning our guitars in seconds! However -remember when? - He shows us two methods - tuning each string using keys of a piano - and tuning off the previous string (assuming at least one string is 'in pitch'. More often than not in the 60's - I would hand my guitar to an expert in the circle and ask them to tune it for me!

Also - all the music notes and tablature in the Guide are written out & drawn by hand.
All sorts of picking methods outlined !!

Uwe was right - what a great find!

I looked through it, and although it dates back to the 1950's, it all still looks like really good info, especially for those interested in the basics. I'm going to try out some of the TAB exercises to see if they help me. Thanks for the link Jay
