I'm not sure i like that drop C tuning. I know it gives that sort of old time sound, but i'm not liking it. The banjo loses a lot of volume and punch. I think even a guitar would drown it out.

Is soldiers joy usually played in drop c tunning or can it be played in G tuning? My instrument always sounds like it is completely out of tune when I ply it in that tuning

The version of Soldier's Joy I arranged is played in drop C tuning (lower the 4th string) to give an old time type sound. It is then capoed and played in D to match the Key played by a fiddle player and other instruments.

While you can play it in G, you might find that you are not able to join in a jam session where fiddle players (Key of D players) would like to play this tune.
