TOPIC: What Banjo do you play?

Re:What Banjo do you play? 15 years 6 months ago #107

I "play" a 2006 Williams custom banjo built by Wil Williams. It has a mahogany neck with rosewood fret board and "leaves and bows" MOP inlays, and Keith tuners on 3rd and 2nd strings. A three-ply maple pot built by Jimmy Cox with a Jimmy Burlile tone ring, Presto nickel hardware, mahogany resonator and other features common to the pre-WWII Gibson Mastertones. Several professionals play Williams banjos and the most popular one is probably Kenny Ingram of Rhonda Vincent and The Rage....Kenny was the SPBGMA banjo player of the year last year. I use GHS JD Crowe "stage" light guage strings. This banjo is MUCH more playable than the entry level I have and is motivating to get you to play/practice more........got me here!

I have a Morgan Monroe Cascade. I started with a Deering Goodtime Special. I traded it in on the Cascade. I wish I still had it. The MM is very loud.:P

Don Parmley is David Parmley's dad. They were both with the Bluegrass Cardinals there for awhile in the late 80s. Don is actually credited with doing most of the banjo soundtracks for the Beverly Hillbillies.

I had been playing on the cheapest Fender banjer in the world, but I just bought myself a Stelling Red Fox. Yoo Hoo!:cheer:

My first reply to this forum. I am possesed by a Morgan Monroe Cascade. I say possesed because my wife says that it owns me and not the other way around. Years ago I owned a Stelling (So long ago I have forgotten the model).Have been singing country and bluegrass for about 40 years and I just felt like I had to try the banjo again. no regrets on starting over or the banjo I have chosen this time around.

I have a banjo I bought 30 years ago at liberty banjo in Bridgeport Connecticut which I believe is now out of business. The resonator is birds eye maple and inside it says Vega Little Wonder. The neck is maple and weights a ton. I think Deering and liberty are somehow connected.

I had a homemade banjo with a lot of inlay and a skin head which I used for clawhammer but I gave it away to my friend's daughter when she went to college. I haven't played in a few years but you never know.
