LOST TIMBRE RIMS 14 years 4 months ago #2264

I have been thinking about getting a Tony Pass TS6000 RIM for the old Stelling. I 've been reading good info about the sound benefits. I know it is a bit of a luxury, but probably worth it.

I have talked to many people about this issue. I was thinking of doing the same thing for my 1983 Sunflower. I was talked out of it because according to many people the old rims were excellent and many actually prefer them. the Old wood rims do appear to be great if you are comparing new rims to purchase. I would talke to Geoff Stelling and get his opinion on the specific rim you have.

Thankss brilind. I will have to give it some time. You can send your old rim, flange and tone ring to Tony Pass and he will fit and finish for $375. Not bad for upgrading a used instrument.

I have a 1979 Stelling Golden Cross and had Geoff Stelling rebuild the neck new frets etc. I asked him about changing to the Tony Pass rim and he said don't do it. The older rims have been seasoned with age, in the instrument, and the older sound is better according to him. He played mine and said the TP rim would detract from the sound. I guess the the question is whether it is better to age a rim underwater or under a banjo head. I have never regretted my decision to stick with the original.
