TOPIC: Tuning The Banjo Head

Re:Tuning The Banjo Head 14 years 1 month ago #2491

I have a banjo that when I play on the 2nd and 3rd fret of the 4th string it makes an annoying vibration on the head. Anyone got any remedies?

Sounds like the bridge slot may be a problem or the tailpiece isn't solid. Good luck. These things can drive you crazy. I my case crazier.

Regarding head vibration, I think your probably right that it might be the tail piece or the bridge. I noticed the bridge was a little different, it wasn't straight across, but it was made with slots for the strings that were offset, and I did remedy alot of the problem when I tightened down on the tail piesce. I'll take a normal bredge next time I go and try that.

Does anyone know how to lower the strings on the banjo frets? Would buying a lower bridge do the job? I bought a Sullivan Festival about a year ago and while I love the instrument, the strings get pretty high off the upper frets and roll out under my fingers. I notice when playing on a Gibson, the strings are closer to the frets.
