TOPIC: History on Ashokan Farewell

Many songs played by people are traditional tunes, or songs originally written and arranged at least a century ago. But Ashokan Farewell is a relatively new tune, written by Jay Unger in 1982. Its first use was as the farewell waltz for Unger's Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camps that take place in upstate New York each summer (it's still used for that). Its most famous use was as a theme to the Civil War miniseries in the 1990's. The eponymous Ashokan was originally a village in the catskills that was flooded to create the Ashokan reservoir. I think it's a great tune. I always find learning the history of the songs adds an extra flavor to playing them. Well, I was a history minor in college, so maybe that explains it.
