TOPIC: Shackletons Banjo and the Role of Music

Shackletons Banjo and the Role of Music 13 years 3 months ago #4623

This is an extremely interesting radio spot on the importance of the Banjo and Music for explorers and life on ship. Shackelton's ill fated voyage to Antarctica around 1914 is discussed as is music and the banjo as vital mental medicine. I think we all understand the medicine of music.

Some of the songs the expedition crew made up for entertainment and demonstrated, remind me of my Grandfather's old British songs that he would sing when we were out on a trip. Among other things he was briefly in Vaudville around WW I period in London. Enjoy.

This is great stuff. I've never seen this part of the forum.I travel by boat quite often and I always bring along my banjo as a stow away, purely for entertainment. If I ever become stranded I will bring it out in order to maintain the sanity of the crew.(my wife Blair)Not quite sure if she will go along with that.
