Here's a good discussion on fretboard maintenance. Everyone seems to has an opinion but using something is a great idea. I have used fast fret, string ease, almond oil, etc, I think that most any barrier is good but some are better than onthers. If applied when needed I'm not sure it makes much difference.

Dave didn't reccomend furniture polish. He says First Quality has fretboard oil. I guess there may be other chemicals in the polish you don't want on a guitar. I'd go with the purpose built oil.
