Banjo Playing and Singing 2 Years, 1 Month ago Karma: 2
My singing is pretty poor, but that aside, I find it next to impossible to play the banjo, and sing. This applies to just rolling in chords. I went to see the Steep Canyon Rangers this past weekend and noticed that when the banjo player stepped up to mike to sing, he stopped picking and was strumming the banjo like a guitar, which tells me others have the same difficulty. Open for tips and comments.

Same problem, I guess it's like "walking and chewing gum" as the old expression goes. I've noticed over the years that lots of professionals go into rythem mode or completely stop play while singing.

Watch BB King closely next time. He can't do it either.

I have observed Hogpaws singing and playing at the same time. Perhaps this is a trait learned from flying airplanes (ie., working the foot controls, hand controls, keeping an eye on instruments and observing what going on outside the canopy).

Methinks that Fretmentor could also do it (we have heard him whistle and hum while playing). However, we may not want him to sing!

It's a difficult tack no doubt. I've been trying to get it for quite some time. A lot of songs just don't sound right without a voice to fill in the melody. But then again they don't sound very good when I sing either.
