How often should I be changing the strings on My banjo? What are the signs that they need to be changed?

There are lots of different ideas on this subject.
I change them about every 4 to 6 mo's and I try to wipe the strings down whenever I notice that the neck and strings are moist from sweat from playing.
I cant tell you that I noitce the sound quality deteriorating, because it happens gradually, but it's very obvious that there is a noticeable improvement in sound quality when you change over to new strings.
